The Family Cellar range was created to be something special from the outset. The marriage of magnificent fruit from sustainable, old vineyards and traditional, hand-crafted winemaking techniques ensure beautifully balanced, elegant table wines that display a true sense of place.

VinificationMarsanne responds well to ultra-modern techniques of cold fermentation in stainless steel. However, it can really shine when given minimalist, old style handling. The fruit was hand harvested and the pressed juice run to old and new barrels. There it was allowed to ferment naturally and aged on full lees for over a year. We have done as little as possible in the final stages, minimising fining and filtration to present the wine in all its glory.

Honeysuckle, melon, straw and spice bouquet; the palate is rich and finishes with a toffee brittle note.

I’ve always liked the wine though in the past it’s tended to be been made in a full, lavishly-oaked, sweet-fruited style. The hot 2009 vintage has produced a polar opposite style. This is lean, salty, smoky and kissed by perfumed, butterscotchy oak – but only lightly. It has fruit flavours of grapefruit and peach but it’s a very lean, racy, grainy style. It’s yet very young; it needs time. I wouldn’t be surprised if I rated it a few points higher in time – it has that kind of potential.

Winemaker Notes
Hand harvested, wild fermented and unhurried. Barrel fermented by indigenous yeast and aged on lees for 18 months, then bottled with minimal intervention. This is a Marsanne of bewitching aromas of pear, quince and musk with layer upon layer of creamy texture and flavour.
