Considered the “World’s Richest Wines”, the Muscats of Rutherglen bear the mark of authenticity, only applied to the great Muscat vineyards of the region. Campbell’s ‘house style’ is complex and elegant, capturing a rich purity of raisin fruit flavours. Walnut, dark chocolate, ground coffee bean, vanilla and nutty rancio characters dominate this succulent drop. A brilliant partner to strong cheeses, plum pudding or as an after dinner drink with coffee.

Vinification

Fruit is left to ripen on the vine until as late as possible to ensure the necessary high degree of lusciousness. Juice is fermented for only a very short time before being fortified with neutral spirit and stored in oak to mature. Only selected parcels of premium fruit are used to produce wines for this solera.

The best of these aren't cheap but, are among the finest and most memorable wines in the world, they're worth every cent: impossibly rich and complex, with a lingering warmth and taste of honeyed history that lasts for hours. I can't think of a single wine lover who wouldn't be overjoyed to find a rare Rutherglen muscat in their stocking on Christmas morning...

A blend of current vintage through to those older than most grandfathers. Truly unique, deep and delicious.

The base of this wine is more than 60 years old and the rare classification indicates that only the material of the highest quality is granted entry to the blend. An exclusive, rare and distinctly unique elixir, it tastes of raisins, burnt toffee, dark roasted nuts and more - the texture is spellbinding."

Quality and balance are more important to Colin Campbell than numbers, so he doesn’t track the exact age of his oldest muscat. It must be monumental, because there are flavours and aromas here that hark back to a bygone era. It’s transported beyond toffee, fig jam and marmalade, to an age of savoury black olives and old, dusty tractor shed aromas. In the midst of this historical odyssey, it retains impeccable poise and balance. The intensity and depth on display here are an epiphany.

We all know Australia makes great fortified wine - though we perhaps don't appreciate it as much as we should. Campbells Merchant Prince, the absolute top-shelf real McCoy, is such a profound experience that you're never likely to forget drinking it. With a chunk of good cheddar. After the first sip, you'll forget the price. Spellbinding.

Though a non-vintage wine, some century-old stocks go into the multivintage blend. I had this at 100 points when I last reviewed it, blind. It's still right there.

As with the Isabella Topaque, is more viscous and more luscious than its peers; the bouquet has an Arabian bazaar of spices, a very complex array of flavours adding to the usual raisin, burnt toffee and hints of tar; another testament to its greatness is its vibrant freshness.

Very old Rutherglen liqueur muscat blends classified as “Rare” are all sublime, but this one is one of the finest. Concentrated, sweet raisin and muscatel characters, toasted nuts, earthy spirit, and great acidity. Superb. Five Stars.
