A consistent award winner, this brilliant gold coloured topaque is an exquisite combination of toffee, honey and cold tea characters completed by a hint of spirit and old oak. For the perfect food match, try rich steamed puddings, caramel desserts, chocolates or simply pair with a quality Italian espresso as an after-dinner drink.

VinificationEach vintage the tokay grapes are left on the vine to fully ripen until raisined and laden with natural sugar. The resulting wine is then blended with wines from previous vintages to produce a consistant house style. This wine contains portions from a number of vintages over several years.

There's an argument to say that the youngest tier of topaque is the most enjoyable, it's so immediately compelling (and dangerous). There are shortbread biscuits, spices galore and honey all to be had.

The delightful marmalade freshness of Muscadelle is on full show here, with an undercurrent of softly spicy complexity and nuances of tea leaves and marmalade. Between three and five years, freshness and maturity find comfortable balance.

I have gone for a lighter Topaque (the ugly new term for Tokay) this year and it is the butterscotch, orange zest and almond notes which have won me over. As a nation, we have fallen slightly out of love with fortified sweeties but I feel that the Aussies are making headway with their unique Topaques and Muscats and this version is the special agent who will surely go deeper into the enemy territory than any before him. Wish him luck. The prize is large – if only we could remember what the game was and how to play it.

Winemaker Notes
The Campbell’s are a fourth generation winemaking family dedicated to continuing a tradition begun in 1870, of producing premium quality wines that reflect the distinctive characteristics of the Rutherglen region. Drawing on their intimate knowledge of the region the Campbells can ensure that they grow grapes of the highest quality. The result is traditional styles of wines with finesse and a subtle use of oak complementing the full fruit flavours.
