Once known as the "Block 14" Syrah, the Gimblett Gravels Syrah is now a wine made using multiple parcels from the vineyard.
The blending of these different parcels combine to create a wine that is truly distinct and appealing.
The vines originate from a Heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand approximately 150 years ago. It produces a wine with an aromatic lift of floral and pepper aromatics and a lushness and denseness on the palate combined with fresh and fine natural acidity.

This floral, intensely
varietal red was estategrown,
almost entirely
hand-picked, and
matured for 17 months
in French oak barriques
(22% new). Bold and
youthful in colour, it
shows good density
of plum and black
pepper flavours, with a
long, spicy finish.

The quality and execution of this Syrah at this
price point is exceptional value. Concentrated
aromas of dark fruits and wild lavender, a
generous depth and silky texture with just the
right amount of peppery spice. 19/20

Craggy Range have one seriously high tech winery; amazing vineyard staff, an agenda of single vineyard fine wine, great resources in Steve Smith MW (now consulting), a private jet, beautiful lodgings, ability to hold prestige tastings, and are arguably one of the best known 'fine wine brands' of New Zealand...
Nice drinking. Maraschino cherry, raspberry, smokey-cedary oak, white pepper, seaweed scents. In the palate, medium weight, fragrant feeling, lightly juicy, finely tannic red wine. Slips and slides, slinks and finishes fresh. It's worthy stuff. Hopefully sub $35 in Australia, and we'd be onto something for sure.
