‘Le Sol’, French for ‘the soil’, is born of the renowned Gimblett Gravels viticultural appellation. The importance of the soil in the creation of this wine and the respect for the Rhone Valley were the leading elements for defining its name. Intensely hand managed, the grapes reveal a deep and dark Syrah with purple hues which represents the very best of the style for that year. ‘Le Sol’ is always aromatically pure with a luscious yet elegant mid-palate and a distinctive fine tannin finish we call ‘Gimblett dust’. Deepest red with vibrant purple hue. Expressive cool climate Syrah with lifted notes of violets, fresh boysenberries, sandalwood and a hint of dried, peppered meat. The palate has a dense core of dark fruits beautifully integrated by acidity and fine, dusty tannins giving the wine a long, elegant feel towards the dry finish.

Vinification

Power and elegance jostle across the palate. Classic fine grained tannins vitalize the rich fruit core and carry the wine long for an elegant, dry and sophisticated finish. Quintessential cool-climate Syrah.

Bold, dark berries, brown and black spices, oaky, fruity and concentrated; a powerful bouquet that envelopes the senses and slowly unfurls in the glass revealing violets and black currant, Kalamata olive and toast. On the palate – as complex as the bouquet suggests with dark spicy black and blue fruit flavours, violet and dark rose, velvet tannins, abundant acidity, concentrated and long. A delicious dry wine. Drink now if you must so long as the wine is decanted first. Ideal window is from 2019 through 2029+.

Spicy and meaty Syrah and because the heat came later in the season (in January) the shape of this wine is a little different to previous vintages. Alcohol is 13.5% with narrower shoulders and a more focussed, punchy, peppery which I really like. This is a slightly more reticent and more discreet wine than normal, but I like its gentleness and calm. 18.5 Points.

A cool spring provided plenty of nervous anticipation for the Craggy Range wine team but a warm, dry spell in mid to late January saw temperatures head past 30 degrees and the result is this wine that is intense in every way - from its deep purple colour to its full body, high but balanced tannins and acidity and its long, smooth finish. 'Le Sol' was aged for 17 months in French oak, 30% new oak, drinks well and has strong ageing potential for 9-10 plus years. 18.5/20 Points.

Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, June 2017
Very dark, saturated black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter on the rim, and very youthful in appearance. The nose is softly concentrated with densely packed and deep aromas of ripe blackberry fruit and black plums entwined with liquorice and Asian spices, unfolding violet florals and notes of iron-earth minerals, and layers of cedary oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rich and lusciously fruited with deeply concentrated flavours of ripe blackberries and dark raspberries, black plums, and subtle notes of liquorice and a fine layer of Asian spices intermingling with violet florals. The oaking is beautifully balanced and integrated, with the palate showing iron-earth and mineral complexities. The fruit is supported by very fine-grained tannin structure providing considerable grip and texture, which carries the rich fruit to a long, dry, fine-textured, exotic-fruited finish of spices, florals and minerals. This is a deeply concentrated, elegantly rich Syrah with considerable fine-grained tannin structure and gip with layers of exotic fruit, spices, florals and oak. 19.5/20

Deep colour. The oak is truly sumptuous, with splendid fruit but shows some elegance too. The palate matches, with velvety, voluptuous fruit, but no flab. Polished and poised. There is some acidity but perhaps it lacks some zest on the finish, which is solid and long. Still youthful, so will go the distance. An always reliable wine but this is one of the best vintages, I'm sure.

This famous Syrah impresses with its lovely fragrance and finesse. Dark and densely packed, with a floral, peppery bouquet, it is mouth filling but not heavy, with youthful, arrestingly concentrated blackcurrant, plum, spice and black-pepper flavours and a finely textured, lasting finish

Supremely elegant Syrah with floral, violet, black and white pepper, dark berry, chocolate, liquorice and mixed spice flavours. A fine-grained wine, with a backbone of ripe tannins that suggests potential without being a barrier to enjoyment right now. Beautifully layered with a complex array of flavours and lifted aromatics.

Blueberry and blackcurrant, white (and some all black) pepper, grilled meat, dried flowers, star anise and cinnamon. Medium bodied, fresh and spicy, dusty peppery tannin, vibrant minerally acidity, savoury first, with succulent small berry and dark cherry flavour in tow. Bursts with fresh fruit and white pepper on the long finish. Classic Syrah. All just so.
