An exceptional 2016 vintage, this Block C shiraz has brought a great quality wine. With a complex bouquet of meaty, smoky flavours and a wonderfully structured palate. The firm, gritty tannins elongate the finish. Perfectly paired with a lamb shoulder dish!

Palate

The palate is classic C Block - rich, expansive and a deep core of powdery Heathcote tannins. Plush and rich, but long and fine.

Vinification

The grapes were hand picked and fermented in traditional open fermenters after gentle destemming, with some batches receiving whole bunches. The wines were then pressed and transferred into French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation (500L puncheons). Racked twice during maturation and bottled in February 2017.

Mostly destemmed, part fermented with whole bunches, 11 months in French oak puncheons (20% new). Stunning dark purple hue; laden with savouriness, spice and detail with dark fruit, pencil shavings, graphite and iron-shavings. The palate is just full-bodied, powdery fine yet compact tannins, exceptional length. (Jane Faulkner)

The quality here is keen. It sits at the upper end of medium weight; it's juicy, it feels fine; the finish has been finessed; there's an array of meaty, berried, smoky flavours. There's breadth to the tannin profile, length to the palate, both character and structure given priority delivery.

Deep red/purple colour, with a bouquet of meaty charcuterie incorporating some reduction. The wine is broad and open-knit, with some meaty flavours again, and quite gritty, firm tannin on the finish and aftertaste.
