Vinification

Grapes were hand-picked from Clarendon’s high country (220 metres). After destemming, the berries were sorted straight into open fermenters. The cold soak was four days, the wines were pumped over daily, and the minimum time on skins was eighteen days. The wine was then basket pressed, combining the resultant free run and light pressings; the heavier pressings were kept separate. Three rack-and-returns were conducted over eighteen months as the wine seasoned in a mixture of fine-grained Bordeaux-coopered barrels.

A 52/48% blend, 135 dozen made from the 41-year-old terraced vineyards of the Hickinbotham Vineyard, vinified separately, with 18 months in oak. The colour is magnificently deep, but vivid, purple-crimson, the bouquet exuding black fruits, the full-bodied palate with perfectly weighted fruit, oak and tannins, the length prodigious. Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine, February/March 2015
The four 2012 reds which make up the inaugural release of this new label from an established vineyard are all sensational. This is serious cabernet. The colour is dense red-purple, the bouquet blackberry and smoky char-oak scented, and the palate profound and concentrated, dense and compact with powerfully arresting flavours and tannins. The finish is long and satisfying. A very impressive debut. Best drinking will be 2017-2040

The Trueman Show: talk about a compelling debut. Vineyard planted in 1971. Blackcurrant, boysenberry, pencil and a flicker of mint/licorice, chocolate wrappers and montelimars. Medium bodied, dense and chewy, shot with ‘minerality’ and brooding appeal: the quality and volume of tannin here is exceptional. Length also. Significant wine. Would never have picked McLaren Vale, not that there’s anything wrong with McLaren Vale Cabernet, I hasten to add.

Winemaker Notes

Trueman is the pinnacle of Clarendon Cabernet. This upland vineyard raises fruit of rare elegance without losing any of its perfumed intensity. There is nothing boisterous about it. Lithe tannins underlie a strap of lively blackberry, and perfect amounts of sinew, flesh and bright acidity guarantee a highly rewarding decade or two. Dead serious Cabernet for the aficionado.
