Rioja winemakers would understand this wine; it is only just medium-bodied, but it has considerable length and intensity to its red fruit flavours, which are wreathed by persistent, albeit fine, tannins. Still in its infancy. Drink by: 2023

This may sound Spanish and it's made with Rioja's favourite grape, but it's produced in the cool Adelaide Hills of South Australia. The exceptionally well-made result is most un Aussie-like: juicy, succulent, some enticing, forward, bright-red fruits and a touch of oak.

This latest vintage delivers pure red to crimson plum fruits with a waft of mint in the aromatic background. Lip-smacking, moreish, refreshing red.

Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine, February/March 2015
A pristine and translucent tempranillo whose vibrant, faintly minty expression of pure varietal fruit is underpinned by a chewy cut of crunchy tannin. Scented with a dusty, spicy perfume of sweet small red and black fruits and restrained older oak, it reveals a long, fine-grained palate of excellent length and texture. Likely to become more savoury with time in the bottle, it's a more elegant alternative to the juicy, densely packed tempranillos emerging from the warmer South Australian regions.

Winemaker Notes

We have worked with two principal vineyards since 2007, remaining true to our aim of a fragrant, medium-bodied but savoury wine. As new growers in the Hills embrace Tempranillo we have widened our sourcing, and in 2013 were fortunate to work with five diverse but uniformly good sites, which made the blend in the following proportions, each contributing a note of complexity irrespective of the volume used: Gumeracha (35%), Kuitpo (30%), Kersbrook (22%), Macclesfield (12%) and Birdwood (1%)
