Smooth and intense, this hearty shiraz is smooth and full of flavour but without any heaviness. Mitchell know how to make great wines and this red is no exception. It’s rich, soft and oozing with dark berries, chocolate, spice and hints of liquorice. A good one to cellar for 5-10 years. Open a bottle with your next steak or eggplant moussaka.

Forty years after establishing Mitchell Wines, Jane and Andrew Mitchell and family produce wines from their 75 hectares of vines, plus grapes bought from neighbouring growers. Their wines tend to be flavour-packed and long-lasting, and reflect their Clare Valley origins. Pepper Tree 2012 appealed very strongly at a recent pairing of Indian food and warm-climate Australian shiraz (plus a tempranillo-shiraz blend). The wine's delicious, sweet, spicy fruit flavours held up through the exotic food flavours. A solid load of savoury, soft tannins added to the drinking satisfaction.

James Halliday Australian Wine Companion, July 2015
Good colour; a very well balanced medium-bodied wine, content that the vintage, the variety and the place will all speak for themselves, with only mild assistance in the winery. The champion wines from 2012 are now emerging, some towering over wines such as this, which is desperately unfair, but life wasn't meant to be easy, was it?
