Palate

Rich, succulently intensifying palate of mulberry, dark plum and blueberry fruit provide up front supple fleshiness that elegantly evolve with underlying elements of chocolate, clove, black olive tapenade, and an empyreal earthiness. The ample texture and volume are complimented by a horde of mouth coating tannin that extends the generous palate culminating in definitive lingering McLaren Vale liquorice notes.

Aged peppery blue fruit aromas with spicy oak adding complexity. Medium-bodied cherry/plum flavoured palate, bordering on the savoury with leathery age developing.

Matured in 100% new American oak. 15% alc on the bottle but 15.5% on the presser. It's a heady wine in all respects. Toasty, bourbon-like characters lead into a flood of warm, malty, blackberry jam flavour, saltbush notes lingering throughout. Tannin is grainy and grunty but well integrated. Too much of a good thing in general, and yet hard to argue with. Inky fruit flavour is certainly substantial, and much of the oak has been consumed by it. Drink By: 2026

Winemaker Notes

“Good rainfall at the end of autumn ensured the season got off to a good start and average rainfall for winter and spring ensured soil profiles were filled for the first time in a long time. Though winter was quite cool bud burst and flowering came on early. The precipitation was backed up by some perfectly mild ripening conditions coming out of spring, which lead to balanced accumulation of carbohydrates and slow diminishing of acid in the fruit.

As everything was so balanced, vintage in fact commenced approximately one and a half weeks earlier than usual. Though flavours appeared to come on early it did take time for seeds to fully lignify and full flavours to appear, but still allowed us to maintain our approach of picking fruit a little earlier focusing on more refinement and finesse. The skins were very dark and thick with a good amount of tannin present at harvest, as well as plenty of concentrated plump fruit flavour and texture.

2010 could well be regarded as one of the best vintages in recent times. What a difference it makes when you have plenty of natural rainfall, mild ripening conditions, clean healthy canopies and balanced crop levels. As our inaugural release of this wine we couldn’t ask for a better vintage to highlight how truly stunning McLaren Vale Shiraz can be!”
