Deliciously savoury, fruity and smoky, this is top shelf Australian Sangiovese. It’s bone dry with aromas of black liquorice and fennel introducing a palate that’s full of sweet cherries, pomegranate and bold tannins. It’s a red wine made for food and would partner especially well with barbecued lamb or pork fillet.

Vinification

The fruit was machine harvested into 2.5t steel bins, transported directly to the winery for immediate processing. Crushed to static fermenters it was pumped over twice a day for approximately 20mins each time. During which time the temperature and acid levels were monitored constantly and adjusted when necessary, after completing fermentation the wine was pressed to tank using an air bag press. It was racked off gross lees directly to barrel to finish malolactic fermentation and mature.

Enormously drinkable. Leaps from the glass with spiced cherry fragrance and keeps the show going in the mouth. Cherry-plum, leather, undergrowth, roasted nuts. A gentle meatiness. Not a big wine, but a thoroughly engaging one.

This wine says a lot about how a variety can find a close connection to its site. Sangiovese and Heathcote are both renowned for their potential to deliver earthy, leathery characters, which here make for a distinctive approach — there’s maybe even some cola elements. There is a really well-crafted matrix of black cherry richness and mouthfeel with finer tannins than most other of this variety.

Fragrant red fruits and notes of tomato reflect Sangiovese’s varietal personality, framed in the fine, mineral tannins of Heathcote geology. The finish lingers long with bright red cherry and strawberry fruit. Varietal and compelling, it’s an accurate reflection of its variety and its region.

There are thyme and savoury notes along with dark cherry and berry fruit on the nose and palate of this Heathcote version of an Italian favourite, with fine if firm tannins on the finish. Try it with lamb shanks or other red meat dishes with a Mediterranean influence.

Winemaker Notes

Sangiovese is a thin skinned variety like Nebbiolo. Known for its earthy more than fruity notes, it has attractive mid red colour and can be characterised by high levels of tannin well balanced by acid. It is suited to well drained soils with abundant sunlight both of which the Heathcote vineyard provides.
