Deliciously savoury, fruity and smoky, this is top shelf Australian Sangiovese. It’s bone dry with aromas of black liquorice and fennel introducing a palate that’s full of sweet cherries, pomegranate and bold tannins. It’s a red wine made for food and would partner especially well with barbecued lamb or pork fillet.

Vinification

The fruit was machine harvested into 2.5t steel bins, transported directly to the winery for immediate processing. Crushed to static fermenters it was pumped over twice a day for approximately 20mins each time. During which time the temperature and acid levels were monitored constantly and adjusted when necessary, after completing fermentation the wine was pressed to tank using an air bag press. It was racked off gross lees directly to barrel to finish malolactic fermentation and mature in mainly older used barriques.

There’s more than a hint of chianti in this stylish spicy red. The palate features intense, medium-weight fruit backed up by just-right dry tannins. It’s impressively Tuscan-like, but Heathcote through and through.

It pretty much nails it every year; again here. It’s warm and meaty but it’s delicious to drink and keeps you satisfied. More for winter and spring drinking than for summer, you could argue. Black and red cherry, cedarwood, dried spiced, leather. A run of tannin. You can rely on this.

The Tuscan grape sangiovese has moved from curiosity to mainstream over the past decade and is much loved by Australian drinkers keen for a savoury note to their red wines. This has earthy and herbal hints, dark fruit flavours and a stern tannin structure, opening up when given some air. The sweet black cherry fruit is aided and abetted by smoky oak that does not intrude. Very food friendly, this would work well in partnership with char-grilled lamb cutlets, or perhaps a veal schnitzel. Good work from veteran former Mitchelton winemaker Don Lewis and winemaking colleague Narelle King.

This has the classic butcher shop nose, and is in turn dry, savoury, tart and rich as it traverses the palate to finish satisfying the drinker’s senses.

It's quite a hefty style, in a varietal context, but with the heft comes seduction. Sweet spice, ripe plum, a run of red cherry and a lacing of cedar wood. It smells enticing and engages you on the palate. It's hard to go wrong here. Screwcap. 14.5% alc. Drink to 2021. (Campbell Mattinson).

A pristine, charmingly fresh and varietal sangiovese whose floral perfume of red cherries and licorice reveals notes of dark flowers, dark cherries and a suggestion of oak. It’s medium bodied, smooth and gentle, with a complete length of delightfully ripened small cherry, berry and dark plum-like fruit underpinned by a pliant but drying spine of fine-grained tannins. It finishes pleasingly long and lively, with a lingering core of fruit and a refreshing acidity. Drink 2017 - 2020+.

Well, tar and rose me if this is the punishment. Fatter, fuller and more flavoursome than your average Spanish red.

Winemaker Notes

Sangiovese is a thin skinned variety like Nebbiolo. It is known for its earthy more than fruity notes, it has attractive mid red colour and can be characterised by high levels of tannin well balanced by acid. It is suited to well drained soils with abundant sunlight both of which the Heathcote vineyard provides.
