Dense, dry and full, this Tempranillo is a delectable blend of blueberries, plums and savoury tannin, with hints of charcoal, coconut, star anise, nutmeg and chocolate around the edges. It’s long and elegant, taking you on a more-ish journey right to the end.

Vinification

A combination of two vineyards from Heathcote, grapes were crushed and de-stemmed into one static fermenter which was pumped over twice a day. During fermentation the temperature and acid levels were monitored constantly. The wine was pressed to tank using an air bag press then racked off gross lees and transferred to barrel to finish malolactic fermentation. It was left to mature in a combination of new French and older barriques.

The wine world lost a wonderful, humble, softly-spoken legend when Don Lewis died earlier this year. As well as being one half of Tar & Roses with winemaking partner Narelle King. Don will also be fondly remembered for his many years at the barrels at Mitchelton in central Victoria. Don was a big fan of tempranillo and a dab hand at making it, as this lovely expression of grape and place demonstrates. There is dark jubey fruit, some gentle perfumed spice and velvety tannin.

Finds a neat middle ground between oak hewn and joven styles with its bright, berry fruitiness, cherry-cola scents, earthiness and firm ropes of slender tannin. Readily likeable for its medium weight, chomp to texture and juiciness, it's a tempranillo that shows some warmth, but also a freshness. Appealing wine.

A bright purple robe verging on opaque sets the tone. The bounce of violet florals, the pulp of red and black cherry, the decadence of booze-soused cherry bonbons and hints of anise and root spice, all edge along a scale of well managed oak tannins. A forceful, vibrant wine, this is high on personality if not a bit hot on the alcohol front. (Ned Goodwin)

One of the more trusted tempranillo producers in the country, here tapping into the wonders of the Heathcote region to create a rich, ripe, black cherry bomb of a wine that exudes a pleasing, balanced attitude to its aromatic, oak sitting behind the fruit and prettier anise and cola. The palate has freshness and flavour in spades, a rich, chewy texture though it eases in the finish with mid-grain tannins.

Winemaker Notes

In contrast to the Nebbiolo and Sangiovese in our range, Tempranillo is an early ripener and has no problem reaching full maturity in the soils at Heathcote.

Tempranillo is prone to developing big bunches and berries when grown in rich soil so the rather gravely, tougher soil specific to Heathcote in particular, provides some restraint. Grown largely in the Rioja and Ribero del Duero regions of Spain, it is well suited to the warm, dry summers of Central Victoria.
