Dense, dry and full, this Tempranillo is a delectable blend of blueberries, plums and savoury tannin, with hints of charcoal, coconut, star anise, nutmeg and chocolate around the edges. It’s long and elegant, taking you on a more-ish journey right to the end.

Vinification

A combination of two vineyards from Heathcote, grapes were crushed and de-stemmed into one static fermenter which was pumped over twice a day. During fermentation the temperature and acid levels were monitored constantly. The wine was pressed to tank using an air bag press then racked off gross lees and transferred to barrel to finish malolactic fermentation. It was left to mature in a combination of new French and older barriques.

Spain’s flagship red variety is going gangbusters in pockets of Australia suited to its early-ripening traits. This spicy, silky and plush version hails from Victoria’s Heathcote region where winemaker Narelle King used her considerable understanding of the variety to achieve a stunning flavour definition.

Medium weight wine but it feels warm, generous and grunty. Tannin is the key here. The wine opens with cherry-plum and cola flavours, adds spice and prune to the mix, and then drives herb-flecked tannin through the back half. There’s warmth, sure, but there’s lots to chew on.

Deep, dark red/purple colour, with a graphite and plum jam aroma, a hint of dried fruit, the palate savoury, dry and rich, with abundant tannins, and a slight chewiness to finish. It has weight and grip and also a satisfying fleshy texture.

Given they specialise in Mediterranean varieties, it's no wonder Tar & Roses have won so many awards, including Top Gold and two Trophies at the 2017 Victorian Wine Show. Strikingly dense red in appearance, it's an inky powerhouse of black cherry, cola, anise and liquorice. It has a deluxe palate with super-ripe, inky black fruits delivering velvety power and immense tannin depth. An iron fist in a velvet glove.

That’s cheap for a tempranillo with a wild nose, and dry as a wooden god, as Mum says. A pinocchio god perhaps? 9/10 Points

Winemaker Notes

In contrast to the Nebbiolo and Sangiovese in our range, the Tempranillo is an early ripener and has no problem reaching full maturity in the soils at Heathcote.

Tempranillo is prone to developing big bunches and berries when grown in rich soil so the rather gravely, tougher soil specific to Heathcote in particular, provides some restraint. Grown largely in the Rioja and Ribero del Duero regions of Spain, it is well suited to the warm, dry summers of Central Victoria.
