Maturation

The resulting wines were then run to new and seasoned French oak barrels for 16 months’ ageing. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The separate wines were blended in January 2015, then returned to barrel for their second winter. The finished wine was then egg white fined and bottled in November 2015.

The bouquet is classic Bordeaux: fragrant, inviting and complex - superbly long and engaging A glorious Awatea, offering exceptional value.

Flows with excellent linearity to a very long, aromatic finish of dark red florals, herbs and cassis liqueur. This has elegance, freshness and balance.

Bright, fresh red with red and blueberries, pepper and subtle leafy flavours plus a seasoning of spicy oak.

Deep, intense, bright purple/red colour. The bouquet shows reserved but clean, fresh blackberry fruit and some toasty oak. Intense and focused, long and emphatic wine. Very cellarworthy.

Te Mata Coleraine, a cabernet blend from Hawke's Bay, has a strong claim to be New Zealand's international flagship wine. The 2014 is superb but Awatea, Te Mata's lower-priced, "second" cabernet style, isn't far behind. 2014 Awatea, a cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc, opens with aromas of violets, leafy blackcurrants, earth, and a whiff of smoky oak. Not as concentrated as its Coleraine stablemate, it still has lovely intensity, seamless, middleweight mouthfeel, tight structure, and a savoury backbone of very dry tannins.
