Palate

The palate overflows with crushed red summer fruit, wild raspberry and cherry. Hints of rosewater and aniseed culminate in this wine’s sumptuous finish. Refreshing in its appeal, beguiling in its detail, Estate Vineyards Gamay Noir ’18 is New Zealand Gamay Noir par excellence – the result of an incredible vintage, this is the best we have made.

Vinification

The unique ‘maceration carbonique’ fermentation, which enhances the fruit and floral aromas of the wine, was used for 45% of the grapes. The other 55% received a traditional, warm, red wine fermentation.

Taste Magazine New Zealand, Summer 2019
The famed Hawke's Bay vineyard single-handedly flew the gamay flag for years in New Zealand, and it shows in its 2018 vintage. In fact, Te Mata's winemakers reckon it's the best they've ever made. It will keep up to two years in the bottle, but no need to wait - open now.

Single-handedly responsible for the seductively scented and soft reds of Beaujolais in France, gamay noir is still rare in New Zealand. Delicious and young, it’s a sort of red wine for white-wine lovers. Bright, light ruby, with fresh, berry-ish aromas, it is medium-bodied (12.5% alc/ vol), vibrantly fruity and smooth, with strong, plummy, slightly spicy flavours, gentle tannins and lots of youthful impact.
