Displaying true regional character and showcasing the best that the Barossa has to offer. Lemon and lime citrus blossom, structure and flesh for miles and a pinpoint and piercing clarity of fruit from top to toe. A lovely mouthfeel that is balanced with bracingly fresh natural acids makes this a great bottle of Riesling, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Tasting Note
Aroma

The aroma is fresh lifted lemon. Bright ripe lemon fruit characters dominate the palate and crisp minerally acid forms the backbone of the wine.

Palate

The palate has rich citrus flavours, balanced by natural acidity and intense flavour. The wine has a refreshingly clean finish with long acid persistence.

Vinification

Harvest was carried out at night. The fruit was pressed (using an airbag press) within an hour of harvest. Care was taken not to lose the delicate Riesling aromas and flavour pre-cursors in the juice. After settling, the juice was warmed and inoculated with a neutral yeast selected for its ability to respect the purity of Riesling. Post fermentation the wine was stabilised, minimally fined, filtered then bottled.

Australian riesling tends to be aromatic and delicate – a result of gently separating the juice and skin (grape skin contains harsh tannins), followed by a cool ferment, meticulous hygiene and avoidance of air contact. Sandpiper provides an altogether more aggressive version of the variety. It’s clean and fresh, but powerful citrus-varietal flavour arrives along with a viscous texture and firm, grippy tannins. It remains a decent drink, but the viscosity and tannin might catch riesling drinkers off guard.

Dried flower and straw aromas mingle with a touch of spice; the wine is very intense and yet also delicate with refined texture and a long persistence. The track record shows it will also age well. Drink now to five years with deep-fried garfish.

Winemaker Notes

The Sandpiper range is named after the migratory bird which visits the Thorn-Clarke vineyards annually from the northern hemisphere - something of a reminder of the tenacity and commitment which is required for long term viticulture.
